Five People Hospitalized after Los Angeles Apartment Balcony Collapses

Four adults and a child were injured when a second-floor balcony collapsed in South Los Angeles accident. The balcony collapse occurred around 5:20 pm at a fourplex near the 4600 block of South Wall Street.

According to NBC4 News, 10 people were evaluated for injuries after the collapse. Ultimately, three women, one man, and a young girl were taken to the hospital for treatment. Their injuries were reported to be moderate and, luckily, were not considered life threatening.

While it was initially reported that the collapse was caused by a car hitting the building, that claim was untrue. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.

A scary accident like this one presents many legal issues. An owner of a rental complex is responsible for keeping the premises safe from reasonable danger, and therefore could be found responsible to those injured if they were renters or guests. The injured guests or residents of the apartment can bring personal injury claims against the owner of the complex for the medical treatment required as a result of the accident, as well as other applicable damages. The owner should have liability insurance which will be important to cover the costs of the damages incurred. The owner may also try direct liability to the person or company who built the balcony, so determining if the balcony met required building code standards is important.

Sorting through the details of a complex personal injury case that requires investigation like this one can be overwhelming. We recommend that the victims of this incident contact a trained California personal injury attorney who has experience handling premises accident injury cases.
