A tragic Culver City car accident occurred earlier today when a woman who was fleeing police collided with another vehicle and killed the driver of that vehicle. The man who was killed also had his young son in the car who also suffered injuries.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the car accident in Culver City occurred when Culver City Police were in pursuit of a woman who was driving an allegedly stolen car. The woman then ran a red light and collided with the BMW in the intersection of Washington Boulevard and La Cienega.
The crash and wrongful death of the driver of the BMW are being investigated by the California Highway Patrol, most likely because it would not be appropriate for Culver City Police to investigate the accident involving its officers.
The woman who was driving the stolen Ford Fusion is only 17 years old and has not yet been identified. The injuries to the young boy in the BMW have not yet been detailed, but we hope he makes a quick and full recovery.
The driver of the Ford Fusion will face serious criminal charges for the vehicular homicide of the other driver. Most likely she will be charged as an adult, even though she is not yet 18 years old. There were also passengers in the Ford Fusion that may have additional claims against the driver, depending on their involvement. Even though they tried to flee the scene, they were apprehended by police.
In addition to the criminal charges, the eight year old boy will have an injury claim against the driver who caused the collision and all of the heirs of the man who was killed have a wrongful death claim. Unfortunately in these situations, the person who causes the crash often does not have sufficient insurance or assets to cover the wrongful death damages, which are extensive. We can only hope that the deceased man has a large uninsured motorist policy to cover at least some of the wrongful death damages for his family.
