Coronavirus–Staying Safe Amid So-Cal Reopening

Coronavirus–Staying Safe Amid So-Cal Reopening

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic led to statewide shelter in place orders. For months, California residents have been required to stay home and only go out for necessities. Recently, counties throughout Southern California have started to lift some restrictions and allow more businesses and activities to begin again.

Los Angeles county is opening slowly–According to ABC 7 News, County officials are “working with industry leaders and health officials to safely make way for Los Angeles County to reopen by the Fourth of July.” Other Southern California counties, such as Orange County and Ventura County have already allowed for more businesses to open including modified dine-in at restaurants.

As Southern California counties work to get our day to day lives back to normal, it is still important to follow safety measures and take precautions both to avoid getting sick from the Coronavirus and to avoid other personal injuries. A few tips for staying safe and healthy include:

  • Keep up the hand washing–it’s important to remember that the virus is still out there and very contagious. The virus can live on surfaces, so washing your hands frequently can help you avoid the virus if you have touched an infected surface.
  • Consider wearing a mask–many Southern California counties and businesses have either required or encouraged residents to wear a mask when entering business or in public. Wearing a mask can help prevent spreading COVID-19 to others, so it’s a good tip to follow.
  • Stay home when you are sick--It’s best to play it safe and stay home when you are sick. This way, you don’t run the risk of spreading COVID-19, and even if you don’t have the virus, you don’t run the risk of catching it when you are already sick.
  • Keep Social Distancing–It is still important to avoid large crowds and keep up social distancing. Los Angeles County Health director Barbara Ferrer reminded citizens that this is still “not time for parties, it’s not time for crowds… There are outbreaks associated with those [and] we would ask everyone to hold off on any kind of parties or large gatherings. That just doesn’t make sense.” As you start to head out to restaurants or the beach, do your best to keep social distancing.
  • Use caution when getting back on SoCal roads–The shelter in place orders resulted in significantly lighter traffic on Southern California roads, which meant fewer car accidents. Now, as more people leave their homes, traffic is picking back up which can increase your chances of sustaining personal injuries in a Los Angeles car, pedestrian, or bike accident. Be sure to use caution when driving or biking on, or even crossing, Southern California streets as traffic picks back up.
