5 Tips for Staying Safe in the New Year

It’s now 2019! The holiday season is winding down, and day-to-day routines are back in action. The New Year brings new hopes, and certainly the hope of avoiding injury is at the top of the list.

In 2018, accidental injury became the number 3 cause of death of the first time in United States history. The National Safety Council reported that “an American is accidentally injured every second and killed every three minutes by a preventable event.” These preventable events include accidents from vehicle crashes to falls. Luckily, these injuries are preventable and by taking certain precautions you can put you and your family on a path toward a safer year.

Below are five ways to avoid some of the most common injuries and stay safe in 2019:

  • Take time to do a “safety walkthrough” in your home

With so much going on in life, it’s easy to forget about small things around that house that if left uncared for, can cause big problems. Taking time to walk through your home this year is simple and can prevent later injuries. Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to be sure batteries are still good. Look out for electric wiring issues or overburdened plugs that could cause electrocution. Check stairs, carpets, and outdoor sidewalks for potential tripping hazards.

  • Check your car and stay alert on Southern California roads

Car accidents are certainly one of the most common causes of personal injuries. To make Southern California roads safer, take time to get a car tune-up. A mechanic can make sure your wheels, brakes, lights are in good working order. Once out on the road, drive defensively. Be aware of other drivers, plan extra time during bad weather, and never text while driving or drive while intoxicated.

  • Stay safe at work

No matter what type of employment you have, workplace injuries can occur. You have the right to be safe at work, so if you notice anything that could potentially lead to injuries, be sure to report it. Follow worksite safety procedures, even if they seem trivial. Wear proper safety gear if your work requires it. Try to leave a few minutes early to work or meetings to avoid rushed commutes.

  • Take safety precautions when biking or walking

Cyclist and pedestrian accidents occur far too often. Just like a car needs a tune-up, make sure your bike is in working order. When cycling, wear a helmet. If you cycle or walk during early or late hours, invest in a light (headlamp, vest light) to help you stand out to drivers. Make it a goal this year to check when crossing the street, even in crosswalks. Stay attentive and avoid texting even while walking and biking, especially in busy areas.

  • Consider safety while recreating

Whether you spend free time this year at an amusement park, the beach, or ATVing, always take time to consider safety. Follow park rules and use recreational vehicles according to their safety guidelines. Pay attention to age restrictions for certain activities. If you are hurt while recreating, document your injuries, especially if the injury was caused by the negligence of park owners or a faulty recreational product.
