CHIPOTLE MEXICAN GRILL CLOSES 43 RESTAURANTS DUE TO E. COLI ILLNESS

Health officials are investigating at least 22 E. coli illnesses allegedly caused by health or food problems at Chipotle Grill in Washington and Oregon.  As a result, Chipotle Grill has reportedly closed 43 restaurants in the affected areas pending this investigation.

It was further reported that about one-third of the E. coli victims were hospitalized, and fortunately no deaths have been reported.  Symptoms may include feeling very ill with vomiting and bloody diarrhea.

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli bacteria, is the most common in food-borne outbreaks, and it is believed that many people affected with Shiga toxin E. coli may not seek health care.   As a result the number of people made ill by this E. coli outbreak is likely more than already identified,   Health Department officials have requested that any persons who have eaten at a Chipotle between October 14, 2015 and October 23, 2015, who became ill, including with vomiting and bloody diarrhea, should immediately see their health-care provider and inform their health care provider about this outbreak.

In a statement provided to Reuters news service, Chipotle stated that it had received notice from health officials that some of the people who got sick ate at six (6) of the chain’s restaurants.  Chipotle added that, “Out of an abundance of caution,” the company closed all its restaurants in the affected area.   Source:

Reuters reported that this is allegedly the third food-contamination outbreak to be linked to the restaurant chain since August.  The wire service added:

“Those earlier cases involved salmonella and the highly infectious virus norovirus.”

Chipotle has 1,700 locations and has grown quickly since it opened in 1993 with a single location.  Chipotle has distinguished itself from typical fast-food restaurants by publicizing its use of healthy and high-quality fresh ingredients in its menu of tacos, burritos and salads.

NBC News reports that the investigation into the E. coli outbreak is still in its early stages, and that it’s likely the investigators will find that the E. coli “came from a fresh food product delivered to Chipotle restaurants and other places.”

If you think you are a victim of E. coli, salmonella or other food poisoning, you should report it to your local health department, save a stool sample for testing and see your doctor or local urgent care facility right away.
